PUBLICITY QUESTIONS
How do you decide which band/artists to take on as a clients?
Well the starting point is simple; first and foremost, I have to be into your music. I can't stress that enough. I also look at whether the CD is well produced/mixed/packaged and is it something that is marketable? Is the band press ready (AND able)? Finally, this might sound obvious, but personality/rapport/attitude, both of the band/artist and label/manager. It's important we mutually dig each other since we'll be working together. Those are the basics.
What the heck does a publicist do?
In a nutshell, a publicist works to increase public interest in his client/client’s project. Sometimes it's called promotion or promo work. Some typical publicists duties include contacting media outlets, soliciting and setting up interviews/reviews/features, composing and sending out press materials and press releases, or doing “damage control”. A Publicist doesn’t typically find agents, distributors, manager’s etc. or book gigs for bands.
Do you promote bands worldwide?
Yes I do and I specialize in promoting bands throughout North America. However it's important to keep in mind promotion is really an individual thing. It partly depends on whether a band is touring and if so where, where they live, where their CD is released (e.g. if it's a US release only) It also depends whether they are just touring through or they reside in North America.
How far in advance of my release (book/CD) do I need to hire a publicist?
You should try to secure a publicist at least 3 to 4 months prior to your official release date. Most print publications have a lead-time of several months (up to 6 months) and you want to ensure that you get press before and when your release happens.
What are your fees?
Rates vary depending on th project and I try to create a campaign based on budget and individual needs within reason. Generally, if I'm working on a release you would be paying a retainer plus any expenses (at cost) incurred on your behalf. Quotes don't cost a thing so send me an email with your requirements and information.
What is a retainer?
It’s a fee that is charged in advance to retain the services of a publicist. For ongoing clients, they pay me a retainer for a specific number of months or an ongoing basis to manage their publicity requirements.
What are “expenses”?
Expenses are charged at cost and include things such as telephone charges, postage, envelopes, and travel.
Can you guarantee me publicity?
No, unfortunately nobody can do that. What I do guarantee is that I will work my butt off for you to get you as much publicity as I can and to make sure you are press ready.
What is your philosophy on getting publicity?
I don’t believe in spamming media or sending out “generic” type of emails or pitches. I feel it’s important to treat each outlet individually and to maintain integrity and relationships. Having been a music journalist and editor for many years, I know what it’s like to be the recipient of spam/generic type of emails.
I’m an author; can you help get me a book deal?
No, you need to find a literary agent to do that. A literary agent works with manuscripts and manuscript negotiations.
